Bongi Mkhize (1972–)
Freedom comes with Responsibility (2006)
Etching, 420 x 300 mm
Donated by the MTN SA Foundation in 2020
Series: 30 Years in Soweto: From Resistance to Leadership
The artist's depiction of women holding bottles alludes to South Africa's high rates of alcoholism and related abuse. The circular shape reminds one of a car tyre which is commonly set alight during protests. Mkhize warns that with hard-won freedoms come responsibility given the legacy of oppression in South Africa.
