Dorothy Randell (1909–2012)
Bust of Ernest Mancoba 1935 (1936)
Bronze casting from plaster original by Etienne de Kok in 2016, 350 x 320 x 170 mm
Donated by the Art and Ubuntu Trust in 2017
When Randell studied art in Makhanda, a young Ernest Mancoba was sweeping leaves outside her studio. She needed a model and approached him, not knowing he was a sculptor working on an art commission in town. Years later, Randell learnt her sitter's identity and, in her 90s, handed over the work to be placed in a public collection.
