This work comments on the epidemic levels of predatory rape and violence in South African male prisons. A raped inmate is considered a wyfie (wifey), an Afrikaans derogatory slur. Stabbing an inmate or warden is often expected to defend one's masculinity. Sex between men is omnipresent yet unspoken, obliquely referred to as daai ding (that thing).
