Gary Thomas (1952–)
The Family (1985)
Samanea saman carved wood, 1145 x 820 x 710 mm
CCAC# 0255
Donated by Albie Sachs, who purchased it in Georgetown, Guyana, in 1999
The family is a recurring theme in the artists’ work. After his mother’s death, his father took him to an orphanage at age four and never returned. He is known for distorting the human form and a smooth finish technique. Sachs was taken by this piece and had it shipped to South Africa.
