During Mendel's visit to the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) office in Johannesburg, 24 people were photographed as a protest against government policies that prohibited access to generic antiretroviral drugs for HIV/AIDS treatment. A Constitutional Court judgment in 2002, in favour of the TAC, led to an extensive treatment programme.
