Norman Catherine - Apocalypse, 1980
Norman Catherine (1949–)
Apocalypse (1980)
Lithograph, 550 x 455 mm
CCAC# 0601
Donated by the artist in 2021
In making this work in New York, the artist drew inspiration from the film Apocalypse Now and Pink Floyd's album The Wall (both 1979). The wall and colours symbolise apartheid's brutality, similar to Catherine's lithograph Premonition of War. The tree evokes movement; a black hole opens up to new beginnings but also uncertainty.
