Some animals in Specs’ work are markers of the qualities he values in others, particularly his father, who he associates with the buffalo for its fierceness and resilience. As an apartheid political dissident, the artist's father spent time incarcerated at the notoriously violent Number Four Prison located next to the Constitutional Court.
