| Artist information: | Babalwa Cekiso is an HIV/AIDS activist and member of the Bambanani Women’s Group based in Cape Town, where she worked as a volunteer with the Treatment Action Campaign in Khayelitsha. After discovering her HIV-positive status in 2001, she became a strong advocate for visibility and access to antiretroviral treatment, believing those receiving care should not hide their identities. Her Body Map reflects a life of activism, resilience, and community engagement, symbolised by her strength to fight for herself and others. Through her work in initiatives like the Memory Box Project, she helped others share their stories and better understand living with HIV/AIDS. |
