Art and Justice: The Art of the Constitutional Court of South Africa

Art and Justice: The Art of the Constitutional Court of South Africa documents and celebrates the artworks integrated into and collected for the Constitutional Court of South Africa. The book pays tribute to the extraordinary vision of the architects and judges of the Court who sought to bring together, in the most inspiring, innovative and dignified way possible, art and the workings of justice, and to give a public soul to the new Court building.

Working closely with the Constitutional Court Artworks Committee, David Krut Publishing prepared the book as a companion volume to Light on a Hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

Art and Justice: The Art of the Constitutional Court of South Africa is designed by Ellen Papciak-Rose and features photography by Ben Law-Viljoen (© Constitutional Court Trust).

Art and Justice: The Art of the Constitutional Court of South Africa serves as a record of the Court’s growing collection of paintings, prints, fibre art and sculptures and pays tribute to an extraordinary vision: to bring together art and justice in a building that would welcome all citizens of the country.

Light on a Hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa

Light on a Hill: Building the Constitutional Court of South Africa celebrates the most important building of South Africa's new democracy. The unifying theme of this building is the traditional form of participatory and transparent justice under a tree, represented in vigorous and creative contemporary architectural language. Richly illustrated by photographer Angela Buckland, the book leads the leader on a journey from Constitution Square to the quiet heart of the Court. The text of the book, compiled and edited by Bronwyn Law-Viljoen, is made up of a series of interviews with Chief Justice Pius Langa, Justices Johann Kriegler, Yvonne Mokgoro and Albie Sachs, the architects, the building contractor, Ambassador Thenjiwe Mtintso who was a prisoner in the Women's Jail of the Old Fort Prison and, at the time of the architectural competition, chair of the Commission on Gender Equity, and others who reflect on the building process and the joy of visiting and working in a place that is as warm and open as this one. Architectural notes and sketches supplement the text and photographs, and the aesthetic and philosophical remarks contributed by architects Andrew Makin, Janina Masojada and Paul Wygers give insight into their vision of the building as a series of spaces linked by routes or passages, and as a structure that gives architectural expression to the idea of transformation and to the values of democracy and ubuntu.
