Artist information:

Christiaan Diedericks is a South African artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, drawing and installation. He was born in 1965 and his work engages deeply with themes of identity, the body, memory and the socio-political complexities of contemporary South Africa. Diedericks is particularly known for his exploration of the human form, often using fragmented or abstracted figures to interrogate vulnerability, power and transformation within both personal and collective contexts.

Diedericks studied Fine Art at the University of Pretoria, where he later became a professor and played a significant role in arts education and academic development. His dual position as both artist and educator has informed a practice that is both materially rigorous and conceptually driven, contributing to critical discourse within South African contemporary art.

His work frequently incorporates materials such as bronze, steel, resin and paper, allowing for a tactile and process-oriented approach to form. He constructs works that evoke tension between fragility and strength, often reflecting on the psychological and emotional dimensions of the body as a site of experience. His sculptures and installations are characterised by their introspective quality, inviting viewers to engage with themes of displacement, introspection and the shifting nature of identity in a post-apartheid society.
