Artist information:

David Goldblatt (1913-2018), born in Randfontein, South Africa, was a significant photographer who documented the country's structure, people, and landscapes from 1948 until his death. Renowned for his powerful images capturing public and private life during Apartheid, his work explored colonial-era architecture, believing it reflected its builders.

Goldblatt extensively photographed the Witwatersrand, his resource-rich home region. Combining documentation and artistry, he was known for his detailed captions identifying subject, place, and time, revealing the impact of racial segregation on daily life. In 1989, he founded the Market Photography Workshop in Johannesburg. He was the first South African with a solo exhibition at MoMA in New York (1998), and his archive is held at Yale University. A major retrospective, "David Goldblatt Fifty-One Years," toured from 2001. He exhibited at Documenta 11 and 12.

Awards include the 2006 Hasselblad Award and the 2009 Henri Cartier-Bresson Award. His work is held in several prominent international collections, including the MoMa, Tate Modern, and the Center Pompidou.
