| Artist information: | Edward West is an American photographer and educator whose practice engages questions of identity, visibility, and social change, with a significant body of work focused on South Africa during the transition from apartheid to democracy. His interest in South Africa was catalysed by his encounter with Sizwe Bansi is Dead by Athol Fugard, a seminal work addressing the lived experience of Black South Africans under Apartheid. This experience informed his later photographic engagement with the country. Following the end of apartheid, West travelled to South Africa, where he produced Casting Shadows (1999), a major photographic series documenting everyday life in townships, informal settlements, and urban communities during a period of profound social transformation. Working with high-speed film and digital printing techniques, he developed a distinctive visual language that blends the immediacy of street photography with a textured, almost painterly surface. Central to West’s work is the motif of the shadow, used both formally and conceptually to explore shifting states of visibility, marginality, and presence within post-apartheid South African society. His images foreground ordinary, lived experience, emphasising the dignity and complexity of everyday life as a site of historical meaning. West has also worked extensively as an educator, including teaching photography within the communities he photographed. His practice is informed by an ethical commitment to engagement and collaboration, and a stated intention to move beyond reductive binaries in representing South African society, instead emphasising its multiplicity and cultural depth. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally, including by the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the San Francisco Art Institute, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Brooklyn Museum.
