| Artist information: | Silke is an artist known for her distinctive and highly detailed style. Born in Hungary, she lived in Israel from 1950 to 1970 before eventually settling in South Africa. Her work draws inspiration from gothic romance and the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, which she reinterprets through a personal and imaginative lens. Her compositions are intricate and richly textured, often creating dreamlike scenes that are both alluring and unsettling. She explores the darker undertones of children’s stories, revealing their hidden and sometimes disturbing meanings. In her paintings, delicate lace-like patterns and fairy-tale imagery appear to float in an undefined space, gradually becoming more solid and intense toward the lower half. This transition creates a sense of depth and unease, suggesting multiple layers of underlying darkness. In addition, her work is shaped by a wide range of personal and intellectual influences, including literature, spirituality, and psychology. Early in her life, she pursued studies in Hebrew literature, law, and psychology, and the ideas of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud played an important role in informing her understanding of the human mind, which is reflected in her art. Her imagery also draws on biblical narratives and the works of writers as well as elements of European and Yiddish culture. Since becoming a professional artist in 1975, she has held over 30 solo exhibitions, and her work is included in major South African collections, highlighting her established presence in the country’s art landscape.
