Gabisile Nkosi

Gabisile Nkosi was born in 1974 South Africa and passed away in 2008. Nkosi became interested in drawing and painting as a means of expression by using visual language to explore personal and social narratives. Her early experiences and surroundings have played a significant role in shaping her artistic voice and thematic concerns.

Nkosi pursued her studies in Fine Arts and the Durban University of Technology in South Africa, where she developed a multidisciplinary practice that spans drawing, painting and mixed media. Her work reflects an ongoing engagement with themes of identity, memory and representation, often focusing on the depiction of the figure and the emotional resonance of everyday life. She was particularly interested in how images can convey layered meanings and evoke both personal and collective histories.

She has participated in various exhibitions and has shown work in group exhibitions across South Africa. Her practice was characterised by an exploration of material and process as well as a sensitivity to form and composition. Through her work, Nkosi investigated the complexities of identity and belonging therefore it positioned her practice within broader conversations in contemporary South African art.

Her work is included in notable public and private collections, including the University of Johannesburg Art Collection.
