Artist information: | Khulekile Hamilton Budaza was born on 8 March 1958 in Kensington, Cape Town. He attended primary school in Ciske and completed his Junior Certificate at Langa High School in 1976. Budaza joined the Community Arts Project (CAP) in 1977, where he received his first formal art training alongside contemporaries such as Lionel Davis. He became deeply involved in CAP’s activities as both an artist and educator, teaching children’s classes in ceramics and later serving as a resident artist until 1993. CAP played a formative role in shaping his career and in nurturing community-focused artistic practice during apartheid. Budaza’s work has been widely exhibited in group exhibitions across the Western Cape. He was also awarded an Italian Government scholarship in 1981 at the age of 23, furthering his artistic development abroad. He is particularly recognised for his collaboration with Cecil Skotnes on the artwork Freedom (1994), commissioned for the Constitutional Court Art Collection (CCAC). This collaborative piece stands as a landmark in South African public art, bridging generations of artists committed to freedom, justice, and cultural expression. References
