Artist information: | Jaco Johannes Sieberhagen was born in 1961 in Victoria West, Northern Cape. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela University), a Bachelor of Theology from Stellenbosch University, and studied sculpting with Prof. Jos Nell at Rhodes University. Sieberhagen is an inquisitive artist who raises concerns about identity, criticises injustices throughout history, and highlights the superficiality of popular culture, which inevitably leads to the destruction of the Earth due to man’s greed. He often creates a series of artworks based on a specific theme, which are typically thought-provoking; nonetheless, they retain a sense of humour and playfulness. Sieberhagen preferred working with materials such as wood and metal. His two-dimensional metal sculptures in sheet steel are precision laser cut, welded together, and finished with matte spray paint. He uses CAD (computer-aided design) and laser technology to construct shadow sculptures out of mild steel. These sculptures depict the mental landscape, and he employed sequential art abilities and techniques to tell a story through the sculptures. The artist frequently used archetypal figures, symbols, and natural elements to tell his visual message. Since 2001, his work has been exhibited in the United States of America, Australia, Nigeria, France, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Germany, Italy, China, and Taiwan. Sieberhagen has participated in various exhibitions, including several solo exhibitions, and his monumental sculptures may be found at sculpture parks in China and Taiwan. Furthermore, his work has been included in various collections, including the Sanlam Collection, Constitutional Court Art Collection, Sasol Collection, and the Hollard Collection.
