Artist information: | Loren Kaplan, a ceramic artist based in Toronto, began her artistic journey in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she earned her BFA from the University of the Witwatersrand and studied at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics. She established her studio in 1985 and began teaching at the Visual Arts and Crafts Academy in Johannesburg. Kaplan creates textured porcelain stoneware pieces, both thrown and hand-built, often featuring delicate botanical carvings in various sizes and forms. She has exhibited extensively in South Africa and Toronto, receiving recognition from the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and the Vita Craft Award in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Her work is included in numerous private collections and the South African Constitutional Court Art Collection. Kaplan's artistic philosophy centers on integrating symbolic, visual, tactile, and spiritual elements, emphasising the potential held within vessel forms and the significance of the space they define. |
