| Artist information: | Madelaine Georgette is a painter and ceramic sculptor whose work explores social, political, and human themes, with a strong focus on South Africa. She holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Washington, and a BA (summa cum laude) in Political Science as well as an MA in Political Economy from the University of Texas at Dallas. After running a successful economic consulting business, she transitioned fully into a professional art career. Her artistic practice is diverse, combining figurative painting and sculpture, often informed by her background in political studies. Georgette has held twelve solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows, including exhibitions at the Frye Museum and the Bellevue Art Museum. Her work has been shown internationally in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Ireland, and is held in private collections across several continents. Having lived in South Africa for 26 years, Georgette maintains deep connections to the country, which is a central theme in her work. Her series Going To Vote was inspired by South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, while later projects focused on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, examining the personal and collective impact of apartheid. These works have been exhibited in institutions such as the University of Washington and Seattle University, often supported by arts grants. Through her art, Madelaine Georgette addresses themes of identity, justice, memory, and community, with particular attention to women’s voices, resilience, and shared human experience.
