| Artist information: | Mikhael Subotzky was born in Cape Town, South Africa based in Johannesburg as an artist and photographer. He works with photography, film, video, collage, and installation art. His work often looks at life in South Africa and explores themes such as history, power, identity, and the way images shape how people see the world. He studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and became well known for his early photographic projects about prisons and everyday life in post-apartheid South Africa. Some of his best-known works include Beaufort West, Retinal Shift, and Ponte City, a major project created with Patrick Waterhouse about a famous Johannesburg apartment building. Subotzky joined Magnum Photos in 2007 and became a full member in 2011. His work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His artworks are known for combining personal stories with social and political issues, giving viewers a deeper look at South African society and contemporary life.
