| Artist information: | Ncedeka Mbune was a member of the Bambanani Women’s Group in Cape Town, where she used Body Mapping to express her experience of living with HIV/AIDS. Her artwork reflects both healing and deep grief, particularly the loss of her first child in 1999, which she linked to mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Through her Body Map, she confronted pain, memory, and the ongoing emotional impact of motherhood and illness, while also reflecting on the importance of consistent treatment and self-care. Her work reveals a powerful balance between sorrow and resilience, shaped by her determination to understand and live with HIV. Ncedeka Mbune later passed away in 2016. |
