Noria Mabasa

Noria Mabasa is a South African artist renowned for her sculptural and ceramic works, which draw deeply on spiritual, cultural and ancestral themes. She was born in 1938 in Xigalo ,Limpopo. Mabasa began her artistic practice later in life (largely self-taught) and developed a distinctive visual language rooted in her lived experiences and indigenous knowledge systems. Her work reflects a profound engagement with Venda traditions, mythology and the role of women within both historical and contemporary contexts.

Mabasa works primarily in clay and wood and creates expressive, often monumental figures that embody narratives of spirituality, fertility, healing and social life. Her sculptures are characterised by their textured surfaces, symbolic forms and emotive presence, frequently depicting female figures, ancestral spirits and scenes of communal significance. Through these works, she addresses themes of gender, identity and the continuity of cultural practices, while also responding to the changing dynamics of South African society.
