Artist information: | Paul Stopforth was born in 1945 in Johannesburg. He uses lithography, metal, charcoal, gouache, ink, oil, and encaustic techniques in his work as a painter and graphic designer. In 1996, he was appointed Director of Undergraduate Studies and Lecturer in Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University. After retiring, Stopforth joined the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston as a full-time visiting faculty member. He has won numerous honours, including the Ian Haggie Award for Best Artist in 1986, the Rodney Burn Award for Figurative Drawing by the Royal College of Art in 1985, the Institute of Race Relations Award in 1971, and the Student Representative Council Award for Best Student in 1967. He has had exhibitions in the United States of America, Europe, and South Africa. His paintings are held by the Harvard Film Archive, the Constitutional Court Art Collection, the University of the Witwatersrand Art Galleries, the National Gallery in Cape Town, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Durban Art Museum, and the Pretoria Art Museum.
