Artist information:

Stefan Blom is a South African sculptor, painter, and printmaker who lives and works in Cape Town. He studied graphic design at the Witwatersrand Technikon in Johannesburg and began his career in advertising before transitioning into full-time artistic practice.

Blom’s practice is strongly informed by process, material experimentation, and a sustained engagement with both figuration and abstraction. His work often explores the human condition through sculptural and pictorial forms that reflect psychological tension, vulnerability, and transformation. Early works are characterised by rough, materially dense surfaces and figures that suggest bodily fragmentation, trauma, and instability, while later works demonstrate a shift toward more refined surfaces and controlled material languages.

Across his practice, Blom investigates the relationship between victimhood and agency, often suggesting a continuum between opposing states such as control and loss of control, or interior psychological experience and external social forces. His works frequently operate through symbolic or coded visual languages, including serial systems and figurative abstraction.

Blom has exhibited widely in South Africa and internationally, with solo exhibitions in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Germany, and participation in both gallery and museum contexts. His work has been shown at institutions such as the Johannesburg Art Gallery, AVA Gallery, and District Six Museum, and is included in major collections including the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa and the Constitutional Court Art Collection.

A key body of work, A Life Story, reflects Blom’s development of a personal pictographic language used to record and encode lived experience. This system operates as both narrative device and conceptual framework, translating personal memory into visual form through abstraction and symbol.

More recent exhibitions show continued engagement with materiality, gesture, and narrative fragmentation, positioning Blom within a broader contemporary South African discourse on embodied memory, psychological states, and post-industrial visual language.
