Artist information:

Véronique Tadjo (1955) is an Ivorian artist, writer, poet, novelist, and illustrator whose work connects literature and the visual arts. Born in Paris and raised in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, she is the daughter of an Ivorian civil servant and French painter and sculptor Michèle Tadjo. Growing up in a creative and multicultural environment shaped her interest in identity, memory, and cultural heritage.

Tadjo studied at the University of Abidjan and later earned a doctorate in African-American Literature and Civilization from the Sorbonne. Having lived and worked in cities such as Paris, Lagos, Nairobi, London, and Johannesburg, she has developed a strong pan-African perspective that is reflected throughout her work. Alongside her acclaimed literary career, Tadjo has established herself as a visual artist whose paintings, illustrations, and installations explore themes of memory, migration, cultural transmission, and environmental responsibility. Her work often combines storytelling and symbolism to reflect on both personal and collective histories.

A major influence on her artistic practice was her mother, Michèle Tadjo, a collector of traditional African art and designer of jewellery. Their shared creative vision was celebrated in the exhibition Tadjo & Tadjo, which brought together Michèle’s jewellery and Véronique’s artworks. The exhibition explored ideas of inheritance, memory, and the legacies passed between generations.

Today, Véronique Tadjo is recognised as one of Africa’s leading cultural figures. Through her multidisciplinary practice, she continues to create work that is deeply rooted in African traditions while engaging with universal questions about identity, heritage, and the future.
