Court Carpets
| Series information: | A number of artists submitted paintings to the Architectural Artworks Committee as part of a site-specific, limited competition to develop artwork-inspired carpets for the Constitutional Court. From these submissions, selected details were digitally scanned and translated by the architects into designs for a series of custom-made carpets installed throughout the building. Produced as part of the Court’s construction and interior programme, the carpets were made by teams of weavers based in northern KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, using custom-dyed wools and employing both hand-tufted and woven techniques, depending on their location and function within the building. They are conceptually installed across key areas of the Court complex, including the Foyer and Court Chamber, the Administration Wing, the Judges’ Chambers, and the Library, with their naming derived directly from these spatial placements.
