| Signage: | This cartoon by Johnathan Shapiro also known as “Zapiro” demonstrates the political climate in 2002 in South Africa. The year 2002 was characterized by the consolidation of power by the African National Congress (transitioning to a Post-apartheid Democracy), with heightened tensions between the government and social movements. This cartoon marks commentary on the HIV/AIDS epidemic faced by South Africa. Nevirapine is an antiviral medication used to treat HIV-1 primarily used for pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission. Zapiro depicts a caricature of Justice Arthur Chaskalson(who served as the first Chief Justice of South Africa in Nov 2001) igniting an explosive behind a large snail carrying Government supplies of Nevirapine towards State Hospitals.
