Signage: | Based on a design by Cecil Skotnes, this carpet was made by Peter Simon. As a student in 1962, Simon had, at the request of Albie Sachs, courageously provided refuge for two leaders within the clandestine liberation struggle who were on the run from the police. After weeks in hiding in Simon’s student cottage, the fugitives escaped from the country. One of them, Chris Hani, went on to head the armed wing of the ANC, and enjoyed great popularity until he was assassinated in 1993. Upon visiting Justice Sachs at the new Constitutional Court in 2005, Simon, now an expert in carpets, agreed to make this carpet for the foyer of the new human rights law library at the Constitutional Court. |
