Signage: | The woman depicted references Miriam Makeba, singer and activist, along with a saxophone player in a jazz bar. Such scenes were common in Sophiatown where music and culture were forms of resistance, yet the title of the work alludes to what was lost due to forced removals, and how the music went from being celebratory to mournful. |
