The fires represent apartheid agents confessing to human rights violations at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, but also the burning pain and anger of those victimised and their families, writes curator Emile Maurice. Just as fire is a symbol of destruction, it tells of rejuvenation, of arising from the ashes like a phoenix.
