Feni draws from Pablo Neruda’s poem ‘I’m Explaining a Few Things’(1937), Neruda’s response to the fascist bombing of Guernica during the Spanish civil war. Feni relates this to the “blood in the streets” in Soweto on 16 June 1976, where Black students protested against government’s plans to impose Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in their schools.
