| Signage: | This image is a commemorative poster titled “Landmarks and Legacies”, produced for the Mound City Bar Association’s anniversary (1991–1995), a historically African-American bar association in St. Louis. It marks a judicial anniversary and reflects on 150 years of commitment to justice and equality, referencing the landmark 1857 U.S. Supreme Court case Dred Scott v. Sandford. A layered composition linking legal history and lived experience through architecture, figures, and text. The background landmarks reference judicial institutions, while the foreground figures, a man, woman, and children, symbolise the living legacy of justice. Key United States Supreme Court cases on civil rights and constitutional law are integrated as graphic text, including Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), which addressed citizenship and the legal status of African Americans under slavery, and Shelley v. Kraemer (1948), which ruled that racially restrictive housing covenants could not be enforced by courts. These rulings are embedded within the visual structure of the work. The muted palette and central vertical axis reinforce themes of legal continuity, authority, and the evolving nature of justice. In a broader reading, the work also resonates with South Africa’s constitutional transition, particularly its post-apartheid legal order grounded in equality, dignity, and non-racialism, situating the composition within a wider global narrative of constitutional justice and transformation. |
