President Nelson Mandela photographed in 1999 during a visit to strife-torn Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal, in an attempt to quell deadly fighting between supporters of his African National Congress (ANC) and the United Democratic Movement. According to the artist, Mandela was angry that day, ‘a far cry from the genial bonhomie that he usually displayed.’

Underlying tensions between various political factions resurfaced repeatedly in KwaZulu-Natal in the late 1990s, as post-apartheid political violence continued to be fueled by a failure to confront past wartime divisions and their legacy.
