On 21 March 1960, 69 people were killed in Sharpeville when police opened fire at a peaceful pass laws protest. The artist chartered a plane to photograph their funeral from above – he felt this was the best way to show the magnitude of the event. In the aftermath, a state of emergency was declared and liberation struggle political parties were banned. The Sharpeville massacre brought the harsh realities of the apartheid regime to global attention.
