Thobani was the first patient on the waiting list for antiretroviral treatment as part of a pilot project in Khayelitsha in 2001. When he first heard he was HIV-positive, there was no AIDS education and the clinics sent him home to die. ARVs restored his health and life and he became involved in the Treatment Action Campaign's activism.
