Signage: | This work refers to Jürgen Schadeberg’s We won't move! Sophiatown in defiance (1955). The original photo depicts a tagged wall and three Black men playing umlabalaba, an indigenous, strategic board game, signifying their planned and persistent resistance to the forced removals at the time. In this re-imagining, the men have left the game, perhaps to protest or to flee the police. |
