| Signage: | This striking work by Mozambican artist Idasse features two elongated, skeletal figures that dominate the vertical plane. Rendered in Conté on paper, the composition combines sharp geometric edges with fluid, organic curves. Dense, velvety blacks contrast with light, feathery strokes, creating a sense of movement and fragility. The figures’ mask-like, featureless heads and distorted proportions strip away individuality, evoking a universal reflection on the human condition. The work resonates with the collection’s commitment to themes of humanity, justice, and resilience. Idasse’s practice draws on traditional Mozambican visual languages while engaging modern abstraction, reflecting on identity and cultural memory in the wake of colonialism. The artwork was donated by Albie Sachs, who acquired it directly from the artist in Mozambique, underscoring the personal and political relationships that shape the collection. |
