1990 - 1994, Thokoza, Gauteng,

A space in the no-man's-land where the war between ANC and IFP supporters was waged for several years from 1990 to 1996. The poem expresses the hatred of the paternalistic racism that pervaded South Africa, as well as the economic disparities wrought by hundreds of years of political and economic subjugation.

Emerging from this context of violence, inequality, and contested belonging, the work engages themes of political conflict, dehumanisation, and the struggle for dignity. It resonates with constitutional protections of human dignity, equality, life, freedom and security of the person, the right to protest, and freedom of expression, while reflecting ongoing socio-economic injustices.
