Artist information:

Anton van Wouw was a Dutch-born South African sculptor, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of monumental sculpture in South Africa. Born in 1862 in the Netherlands, he immigrated to South Africa at the age of 28, settling in Pretoria during a period of rapid urban and political development. His early years in the country were marked by limited opportunities, and it took nearly a decade before he received his first major commission from financier Sammy Marks to create a statue of Paul Kruger, which remains a prominent landmark on Church Square in Pretoria.

Within the context of the Constitutional Court Art Collection, Anton van Wouw’s work is engaged as part of a broader dialogue about South Africa’s complex histories and evolving democratic values. His early admiration for the Boer nation and the themes of resilience and identity present in his work are understood within their historical context, while the Collection creates space for critical reflection on how such narratives have been constructed and represented. Although his sculptures are representational and marked by a strong sense of physicality and emotional expression, their inclusion in the Collection invites viewers to consider questions of inclusivity, justice and human dignity—core values of the Constitutional Court. In this way, the work contributes to an ongoing conversation about memory, representation and the importance of engaging diverse perspectives within South Africa’s constitutional democracy.

Among his most notable works is the figure of a woman for the Women’s Monument near Bloemfontein, created in collaboration with architect Frans Soff. He also produced significant portrait sculptures, including a bust of General Christiaan de Wet and a statue of Louis Botha in Durban. His final major commission, Woman and Children (1938), is a bronze sculpture commemorating the role of Voortrekker women during the Great Trek. Located at the base of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, the work stands over four metres tall and weighs approximately 2.5 tons. It was cast by Renzo Vignali, with identified models contributing to the figures represented.
