| Artist information: | Azwifarwi Ragimana is a South African sculptor and visual artist. Ragimana grew up in the Tshandama village of Venda (Limpopo), and got introduced to wood sculpting by his brother in law. At the tender age of 15 he had started selling the works that he made. Ragimana’s practice is rooted in sculptural processes, often engaging with found materials and wood, through which he explores themes of memory, identity, and spiritual connection. His work reflects a sensitivity to material transformation and the ways in which objects can carry personal and collective histories. Ragimana pursued his studies in fine art in South Africa, where he developed a multidisciplinary approach that includes sculpture, installation, and drawing. His artistic development has been shaped by an interest in indigenous knowledge systems and the relationship between nature, material, and cultural memory. He is particularly interested in the symbolic and metaphysical qualities of materials, often allowing the process of making to guide the conceptual direction of his work. He has exhibited in various group exhibitions across South Africa and has become known for his evocative sculptural forms that merge organic and constructed elements. His work frequently engages with themes of transformation, continuity, and the interplay between the visible and invisible. Ragimana investigates the tensions between tradition and contemporary life, positioning his work within broader conversations around identity and belonging in post-apartheid South Africa through his practice. His work is included in public and private collections, including the University of Johannesburg Art Collection and other institutional holdings. Ragimana continues to contribute to contemporary South African art through exhibitions and collaborative projects. |
