| Artist information: | Collen Maswanganyi is a South African artist whose practice engages with themes of identity, migration and everyday life within contemporary society. He was born in 1971 in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga. Maswanganyi draws on both personal experience and broader social narratives to inform his work. His upbringing in a rural context, alongside later experiences of urban life, has contributed to a practice that reflects on movement, adaptation and the complexities of belonging in post-apartheid South Africa. Maswanganyi studied Fine Art at The Technikon Witwatersrand, where he developed a multidisciplinary approach that includes sculpture, drawing and installation. His work is characterised by the use of found and repurposed materials, through which he constructs figurative and symbolic forms. These materials often carry their own histories, allowing him to explore layered narratives of labour, survival and transformation. His sculptural works frequently depict human figures and scenes that reference both intimate and communal experiences, engaging with issues such as displacement, economic struggle and resilience. Through a process of assembling and reconfiguring materials, Maswanganyi creates works that are at once grounded in lived reality and open to broader interpretation. His practice reflects an ongoing interest in how personal histories intersect with wider socio-political conditions. Maswanganyi has exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions across South Africa, and his work is represented in a number of public and private collections. Within the context of the Constitutional Court Art Collection, his work contributes to dialogues around dignity, representation and the lived experiences of South Africans, aligning with the Court’s commitment to social justice, inclusivity and the recognition of diverse voices. |
