He studied History and Legal Studies at the University of Natal and completed his degree in 1995, before deciding to pursue photography as a career. Southwood is known for creating thoughtful, often humorous photographs that explore everyday life, communities, and urban spaces in South Africa. Over the years, he has worked on several long-term projects, including Milnerton Market (2011), which captures a decade of life at a Cape Town flea market; Bill of Rights (2014), illustrating South Africa’s constitutional rights; MEMORY CARD SEA POWER (2014), telling the story of Tanzanian stowaways in Cape Town; and HUSTLES (2018), a portrait of Johannesburg’s city life and architecture.
