| Artist information: | Khehla Chepape Makgato is a South African artist whose practice engages with themes of memory, identity and socio-political history. He was born in South Africa, where he continues to live and work. Makgato studied Fine Arts at University of the Witwatersrand, where he developed a multidisciplinary approach that spans drawing, printmaking and installation. Makgato began producing work that reflects on personal and collective histories, often referencing archival materials, found imagery and historical narratives. His practice critically examines the lingering effects of colonialism and apartheid, using visual strategies that layer text and image to interrogate systems of power and representation. Makgato’s work has been exhibited widely in South Africa and internationally and he has participated in numerous group exhibitions that foreground contemporary African perspectives. His work often incorporates elements of repetition, fragmentation and recontextualisation, inviting viewers to reconsider dominant historical narratives and engage with overlooked or suppressed voices. He has completed residencies and participated in collaborative projects that contribute to ongoing dialogues around memory, space, and identity in post-apartheid South Africa. His work is included in public and private collections, including the Wits Art Museum and other institutional collections. |
