Willem Boshoff

Willem Boshoff is a South African artist who grew up in Vanderbijlpark in an environment that fostered both technical skill and creative curiosity. His father, Martiens, was a trained carpenter, and this early exposure to craftsmanship instilled in Boshoff a lasting appreciation for wood as a material as well as a respect for technical expertise that would later inform his artistic practice. He developed an interest in sculpture at the age of 15, although he chose not to exhibit his work publicly until the age of 30, marking a deliberate and considered entry into the art world.

Boshoff pursued a career in art with a focus on conceptual and language-based practices, developing a distinctive approach that integrates sculpture, text and linguistic exploration. He held his first exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 1981, and has since produced a number of significant works positioning him as a prominent figure in contemporary South African art.

His work has been exhibited extensively both locally and internationally, featuring in major platforms such as the Johannesburg Biennale, São Paulo Biennale, Venice Biennale and Havana Biennale, as well as institutions including the Museum for African Art at the Smithsonian in Washington.

Boshoff’s academic career spans more than two decades, during which he served as head of the Department of Fine Art at the Technikon Witwatersrand, now the University of Johannesburg. His academic contributions are further reflected in his receipt of an honorary doctorate from the University of Johannesburg. He has delivered guest lectures on the interaction between visual and audio arts at various institutions and has published numerous essays and articles, contributing to critical discourse in the arts.
