Carpets (Welsh library)

Series information:

The Architectural Artworks Committee commissioned artists to create artwork-inspired carpets following a site-specific limited competition, as part of the building's construction.

The canvas painting, The Heads, which depicts human silhouettes in colour variations, was used by Siphiwe Zulu and Storm Janse van Rensburg in their submission in 2002/3 to the CCAC, in response to the invitation to artists for proposals for integrated artworks for the new Court. The site of the artwork being the Welsh Library.

The carpets were made to fit in the Welsh library which is known to be a beacon to both the Court building and to the Constitutional Hill. The colour variations of each carpet were made to echo the symbolic reference of the Welsh library side of the Court, that is known as a tower of light with reference to knowledge and enlightenment.

The competition submission had 'the heads' cut out from the square format painting, illustrating loose carpets. These can be normally found on one of the levels of the Welsh Library, with a fitted carpet taken from the same palette on another level of the library.
