| Signage: | A stair nosing is a building element on the edge of a step to bring to one’s attention a change in level and, if necessary, to serve as a non-slip strip. The stair nosings in the Constitutional Court, designed by Jabu Nala, were inspired by patterns on traditional Zulu clay pots for which the Nala family are renowned. Jabu Nala was commissioned to make lengths of patterned tiles with traditional clay markings. Her designs were then cast in brass and applied along the edges of the courtroom and exhibition gallery steps, lending a beauty and warmth to the Court environment. A clay pot, or Uphiso, by Ntombi Nala is displayed alongside these nosings. |
