| Signage: | In this work, Specs presents a powerful human-animal hybrid figure that merges a human face with the features of a Cape buffalo. Executed in pen and ink, the monochromatic drawing uses detailed linework and strong tonal contrast to create an image that is both confrontational and emotionally charged. The figure’s sweeping horns and animal features suggest strength, resilience, and aggression, while the direct human gaze establishes an unsettling encounter with the viewer. Drawing from conversations with his father about apartheid-era violence and imprisonment, Ndimande combines personal memory with broader histories of oppression and survival in South Africa. The hybrid form becomes a metaphor for both the oppressed and the oppressor, deliberately blurring distinctions between victim and perpetrator. In this way, the work reflects on inherited trauma, intergenerational memory, and the psychological impact of systemic violence. By merging human and animal identities into a single figure, Conversation III asks the viewer to confront difficult questions around power, dignity, and the lingering effects of apartheid in contemporary South Africa. |
