Artist information: | Born in 1994, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Richard “Specs” Ndimande is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist currently working and living in Johannesburg. He studied at the University of Johannesburg where he obtained a Degree in Fine Arts (2017). Ndimande’s practice looks at societal problems that affect the social structure of society. As a central focus he comments on themes of oppression, servitude, exploitation and he is fascinated by the human-animal hybrid. Ndimande’s figural work depicts the oppressed as prey and the oppressor as the predatory beast. Thus, allowing him to explore the oppressed and the oppressors in one figurative element, hiding who is truly in power. Influenced by emotional conversations shared between the artist and his father, about South Africa’s past. Ndimande’s current practice is about a vivid examination of society manipulating its younger generations into carrying the sins of their elders. Through painting, drawing, sculpture and installation Ndimande questions, what it means to be a new generation. Is it a new, different kind of human beings, or is it a modified continuation of a society that conforms to older patterns of society? Source: https://specsndimande.com/ |
