Signage: | Mandela made his first trip to America in June 1990, 4 months after leaving prison. The artist went to see Mandela in Detroit, then painted this work of him in the New York Harbour. According to the artist, Mandela is universally recognisable and associated with justice and human rights, as the Statue of Liberty is with freedom. |
