Malangatana’s characteristic visual language reflects on the experience of colonialism, nationalism and conflict in his home country, Mozambique. The artist was a highly visible political activist in the fight for independence, and is renowned worldwide for his art. The drawing shows the turmoil of the Mozambican Civil War (1977–92).
