Yaya Mavundla wears the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress in front of the Constitutional Court at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg (December 2018), in a photographic series by Neo Ntsoma marking the work’s first presentation in South Africa. The image stages a powerful dialogue between the Constitutional Court as a symbol of South Africa’s hard-won constitutional protections and the dress’s global mapping of ongoing LGBTIQ+ criminalisation. Framed against the Johannesburg skyline, including the Hillbrow Tower and the contemporary glass architecture of Constitution Hill, the composition underscores a tension between legal progress and regional inequality. The monumental scale of the dress, spanning more than 16 metres, amplifies its presence within this civic landscape, while the overcast sky lends a subdued, reflective tone to the scene.
